I read her extraordinarily smart and brave interview with $pread some months ago, and learned that she was facing a huge jail sentence. It's obvious she was railroaded into committing suicide.

Meanwhile, swine like Vitter, who used her agencies services while causing misery to sex workers around the world, get off scott free.

Horrifying.

Nearly as horrifying is reading the comments. It makes it clear that, if you work in the sex industry, it doesn't matter if you die to most people- even supposedly educated, liberal ones.

This punched me in the gut.

It wouldn't surprise me if she was murdered for threatening to disclose the names of high profile clients.

Having "inconvenient" people of lower station "eliminated" to save ones reputation, money, and position in society has always been a "privilege" tacitly accorded to the rich and powerful (usually by others who are also rich and powerful).

If she was murdered (and I think there is a good possibility she was) the police aren't going to overly exert them selves looking for the guilty party or parties responsible because of who they are (or even who they "might" be) because that just "how things are".

Even if it was a suicide the fact that she was driven to it, while those who freely did business with her continue their oh so precious privileged lives uninterrupted by a “scandal” is utterly revolting.

The stench of hypocrisy in this whole travesty is overwhelming.

It's a sad end to a sad story. I'm still shocked that Vitter was allowed to remain in the U.S. Senate.

I never like to buy into any conspiracy theories without proof, but this certainly lets a lot of people off the book whose names might have been buried in her documents.

"It makes it clear that, if you work in the sex industry, it doesn't matter if you die to most people- even supposedly educated, liberal ones."

I've seen this a lot, especially from otherwise very smart and cool women. They blame jerk men's behavior on female sex workers, almost more so than on the jerk men themselves. It's infuriating.

I really hope somehow, her records come out anyway.

I suspect that just about everybody in the free world has doubts about her "suicide".

i didn't get that from the comments at all, but i'm liable to make flip comments about any stranger's death regardless of their profession. i don't know how much it really matter to anyone when most people they don't personally know die.

Ben and I have been talking about how awfully convenient it is that she went out so quickly and quietly.

And where's the black book?

Did anyone read the excellent Kreider essay* about Eyes Wide Shut? Where he points out that all the sexy into-the-night stuff is just a smokescreen for the fact that rich men can kill women who threaten to disclose their kinky habits? And how no one comments on this, ever, and just accepts covering up a murder?

Yah, that seems kinda like this.
